So the lad's done it, bagged himself the Formula 1 world championship, and what's more Fernando Alonso will be the youngest champion in history (he's only 23). Good for him, and I quite understand the Alonsomania which has swept over Spain. But anyone who has driven in Spain in the last few days (or even taken a taxi) knows there is a downside - overidentification. Yup, there are Alonso imitators out there on the roads, fortunately not too many, but enough to make driving in Spain just a tiny bit more hair-raising than usual. So I have added a new page of tips and advice for Driving in Spain - read it or read on.
Alonso gained his victory at the Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005, in Sao Paulo. The points won for his third place mean he he is guaranteed to be in the top position at the end of the season, even though two races are left, at Suzuka, Japan, and Shanghai, China.

Even more remarkable than Alonso's youth is the following he has built up: according to the official Formula 1 website, "Over 10 million people watched Alonso’s triumph on Spanish television channel Telecinco, and combined with a simultaneous broadcast on TV Catalunya’s TV3/33 station, average audience share reached over 60 percent." Spain is a country of football fanatics where motor racing has rarely caught the popular imagination, but the Brazilian Grand Prix was "the most watched sports event of 2005 in Spain, even exceeding audiences for the country’s international soccer fixtures."
