Alcázar de Segovia

Segovia's Alcázar (combined fortress and palace) is said to have been the inspiration for Disney's castle in "Sleeping Beauty." This is the official site, so far as I can tell: history, general information, the Alcázar as museum, its different rooms, and more.

Alexander in Segovia

Many visitors to Spain who have looked around Spain and Portugal for Visitors must feel they are following in Alexander's footsteps (or pushchair tracks).

Mesón de Cándido

The most famous restaurant in Segovia, Old Castile and possibly Spain, renowned for its Castilian roast meats - suckling pig, lamb and kid, slow-roasted until it can be cut with a thick plate - has, in Frommer's words, "fed, over the years, everybody from Hemingway to Nixon." .

Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Esteban Vicente

To quote from this website, "Esteban Vicente (Turégano, 1903 - Long Island, 2001)," was "the only Spanish member of the first generation of the New York School of Abstract Expressionism in America." This gallery is worth visiting for the building alone, a royal palace constructed in 1455.

Royal Segovia Mint

Here is a curiosity. Apparently, the Royal Mill Mint is "considered to be the oldest industrial building still standing in Spain and one of the oldest mechanized manufacturing plants still remaining in the world."

Segovia

One of the most visited cities in Spain, famous for its mediaeval streets, its Roman aqueduct, its Alcázar (Moorish fortress-cum-palace: the one in Segovia is said to have been the inspiration for the castle in Disney's "Sleeping Beauty"), and its gastronomy, Segovia is a must-see if you are based in Madrid and worth going out of your way for anyway. This is a very unmunicipal city council site, nice to use though confused, and not much of the English-language content really is.

Segovia, World Heritage City

Very thorough presentation of Segovia and its sights, with good photographs. The introductory page is in English, most of those that follow are not.

Turismo de Segovia

Segovia's long-awaited municipal tourism information website does not disappoint - it is exemplary, entertaining and informative and as comprehensive as you could reasonably expect (though a little more information about the city's sights, particularly its less famous ones, would have been welcome). But the site covers Segovia as world heritage site, how to reach Segovia, getting to know Segovia (guides, tourist information and so on), Segovia's sights, monuments and museums, tours (suggested walks), gastronomy (Segovia is famous for its Castilian roast meats, especially cochinillo, suckling pig), arts & crafts, shopping, free time and leisure (cinema, theatre and nightlife), cultural Segovia (art galleries and the like, but also including fiestas, this is Spain, after all), accessible Segovia (Segovia for the blind or disabled), different ways to "discover" Segovia (language tourism, religious tourism, family tourism, nature tourism), and Segovia as a conference venue. In addition, it has very useful directories of hotels and restaurants. All in all, nine out of ten.

Urbanos de Segovia

The municipal bus company. The Tourist Bus ride leaving from the aqueduct every hour on the hour in summer, less frequently in winter, is an option for those who want to see Segovia as thoroughly as possible in the shortest time. The standard adult fare is 5 euros.
