Mataró is the capital of the county of Maresme and also functions as a dormitory town for the city of Barcelona, though it is a large enough place in itself with a population of over 100,000. It is an old city, founded in Roman times, and as well as its beaches has a number of sights of interest, Roman, mediaeval, Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassical and Moderniste buildings to attract visitors.
