Getxo Web

Entertaining site which shows what a couple of teenagers can do when left to it (though they've probably finished university by now).

Puente Colgante

It is a shame the Bilbao authorities don't make more noise about this, the Biscay Transporter Bridge, the oldest of its kind in the world, opened in 1893. Its steel girders and stays remind most of the Eiffel Tower (and its designer, Martin Alberto de Palacio y Elissagüe, was a friend of the great French engineer). You can cross the bridge conventionally on the gondola which shuttles between Getxo and Portugalete carrying half a dozen vehicles and up to fifty or so pedestrians, or take the lift up to the walkway connecting the two towers at a height of fifty metres over the ría, estuary. Recommended for all except acute acrophobics.
