Couto Mixto

O Couto Mixto, the Mixed Manor, is a group of three hamlets, Santiago, Rubias and Meaus, in the south of the province of Ourense. It is extraordinary for its historic status as an independent territory within Spain but belonging to Portugal, which functioned as a kind of no-man's land between Portugal and Galicia, the inhabitants of which enjoyed tremendous liberties - they were not obliged to pay taxes, or do military service, or even adopt a nationality, and were practically immune from arrest. This situation lasted from the Middle Ages until as recently as 1868 (when the Spanish and Portuguese governments settled this border dispute by swapping the Couto Mixto for another group of villages within Portuguese territory, enticingly named the "Pueblos Promiscuos"). The link goes to the website of the local Residents' Association, a thoroughly praiseworthy effort, particularly as there are fewer than two hundred of them.
