CM Campo Maior

A small, attractive fortress town, Campo Maior has been through the wars like few places in the world. Its greatest tragedy occurred in 1732, when a gunpowder magazine was struck by lightning - the explosion killed 1,500 people and destroyed over 800 houses, most of the town at the time. The 1766 Capela dos Ossos, Chapel of Bones, commemorates the event, its walls and vaulted ceiling being covered with human bones: craniums, femurs and so on arranged in rows and arches in macabre mosaic effects, including two complete skeletons.
