Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês

Peneda-Gerês would be notable if only because it is the only national park in Portugal, but it is much more interesting than that. Its name refers to the Peneda-Gerês system of mountain ranges which "form a barrier between the sea shore plains to its west and the plateaus to the east." Gerês, as it is also referred to, is beautiful, large (702.90 km2, spanning five municipalities in three districts), wet (if only for the numerous reservoirs), high and mountainous, and, though wild, far from wilderness. The most interesting thing about Peneda-Gerês is the coexistence of nature with human communities, its flora and fauna being remarkable, though legislation was necessary to prevent wolves and golden eagles being hunted to extinction. Local domestic or bred animals are also remarkable - semi-wild horses called Garrano, the Barrosão ox, a beast of burden in danger of extinction, and the Castro Laboreiro hunting dog. The link above should go to the park's official website but, to be honest, I have never got it to work.
