Puente la Reina - Gares
Puente la Reina is a small (pop. approx. 2,500) town in the south-west of Navarre. It importance (definitely greater than would appear at first sight) lies in its being the confluence of two Caminos, the Camino Frances through Navarre, and the Camino de Aragón through Huesca (the latter, in turn, has already been joined by the Caminos from Catalonia and Saragossa). It owes its name to its singular and lovely bridge over the Rio Arga, commissioned by Doña Mayor, wife of Navarrese King Sancho Garcés III. The 11th or 12th-century bridge has six slightly pointed arches and five pillars, and peaks elegantly in the middle. The lnk goes to a not terribly informative website which I suspect is municipal - it's definitely Spanish-only.Added on: 07-Mar-2006 | hits: 116
