La Palma Biosphere Reserve 

Because of its uniquely spectacular landscapes, flora and fauna, most of La Palma's territory is included in its biosphere reserve, in one of its three forms: "transition,""buffer" and core" areas. This Spanish-only website has all the information you might want: the history of the biosphere reserve, its functions, related parks and nature reserves, sustainability and human influences (including local culture), treks and walks, and recommended, sustainability-friendly hotels and restaurants. It only lacks an English-language version and rather more graphic material than the miserly 36 admittedly excellent photos in its gallery.

San Andres y Sauces 

An important part of La Palma Biosphere Reserve's core area is found in the municipality of San Andres y Sauces, in the north-east of the island. Its lush flora and rare fauna are set amidst spectacular canyons and the 2 euro-cost of the visit to the Las Tilas waterfall is a snip. The rivers that have their sources here are actually diverted to feed hydroelectric power plants, and the waterfall is turned off from October onwards, but the area is worth visiting even then.
