Monterrei 

Monterrei is a small town in the south of the province of Orense (or Ourense) bordering on Portugal, and the centre of a small denominación de origen. As D.O., it produces fine, not (yet) great wine, the white being better than the red, as is traditional in this part of the world. As a town, it consists of little more than what tends to be called the acropolis, the hilltop fortress complex of Monterrei, but that is more than enough to justify a visit. This link, though, goes to the particularly well made website of the regulatory board of the D.O. Monterrei - I especially enjoyed the Tasting Notes, perhaps because I've always thought the main point of wine was that it should be drunk.

Verin 

Verin is actually the next municipality along from Monterrei, but it's a bit bigger and more important and seems to take over the functions of local capital without really trying. It's still a spliendidly rural place, though.

Concello de Verín 

Verín is not Monterrei, it is the adjacent municipality, but its slightly larger size naturally makes it a kind of local capital. And it's still quite rural enough for most. This is the (inevitably) Spanish-only municipal website for Verín.
