Fortaleza de Monterrei
From Castillos.net, the magnificent fortress (often called acropolis) of Monterrei. Spanish-only, but you won't mind.Added on: 18-Oct-2007 | hits: 126

Monterrei
Monterrei is a small town in the south of the province of Orense (or Ourense) bordering on Portugal, and the centre of a small denominación de origen. As D.O., it produces fine, not (yet) great wine, the white being better than the red, as is traditional in this part of the world. As a town, it consists of little more than what tends to be called the acropolis, the hilltop fortress complex of Monterrei, but that is more than enough to justify a visit. This link, though, goes to the particularly well made website of the regulatory board of the D.O. Monterrei - I especially enjoyed the Tasting Notes, perhaps because I've always thought the main point of wine was that it should be drunk.Added on: 18-Oct-2007 | hits: 98

Verin
Verin is actually the next municipality along from Monterrei, but it's a bit bigger and more important and seems to take over the functions of local capital without really trying. It's still a spliendidly rural place, though.Added on: 18-Oct-2007 | hits: 65

Concello de Verín
Verín is not Monterrei, it is the adjacent municipality, but its slightly larger size naturally makes it a kind of local capital. And it's still quite rural enough for most. This is the (inevitably) Spanish-only municipal website for Verín.Added on: 18-Oct-2007 | hits: 38
