D.O.Q. Priorat

The Denominació d'Origen Qualificada Priorat corresponds to the Tarragonese county of El Priorat, lovely, rolling countryside in the inland centre of the province. It is an ancient wine-producing region, recently resurged and now making some of the finest (and most expensive) wine in Spain, hence the "Qualificada," a distinction shared only with the much better known La Rioja region. It is not large and its climate is very dry, so its production is limited (25,000 hectalitres, compared with over 700,000 hectalitres from La Rioja), which pushes the prices up further, and its authorized grape varieties are largely (not exclusively) authocthonous: cariñena (here called mazuela), different garnachas, and so on, contributing to Priorat's idiosyncracy.

El Priorat

Wonderful website from a couple called David and Rossana who fell in love in El Priorat (everyone say "aahh"), live there and have put together the site as a magnificent collection of photos of the area, and a separate directory of resources, with gorgeous little corners like the one dedicated to history and legend, and much more. Wholeheartedly recommended.

Priorat, El

The tourist information site of the Consell Comarcal, county council, is quite fine except for the language (Catalan only). Headings are Viticultura (wine making), Pobles (towns and villages), Turisme (tourist establishments like hotels and restaurants, routes, and so on), Entorn i natura (nature and nature reserves), and Oleicultura (olive oil making).

Falset.net

Falset also has this, non-official, slightly commercial website, available in English and Spanish as well as Catalan. Its headings include "How to get to Falset," "Lodging in Falset," Restaurants," "Commercial Guide," and so on, and it offers a map, an interactive map, plenty of images of Falset of one sort or another and some tasty-looking "Routes on Foot."
