D.O.Terra Alta
Vines and olives are the traditional economic base for the Terra Alta region, and it is a denominació d'origen of interest. The strong (up to 15º), straw-coloured, white wine is the more traditional (as is common elsewhere in Spain), but rosés and reds (including reservas and gran reservas) are also made, as well as a hard-to-find, very strong dessert wine. The link goes to the web site of the D.O. Terra Alta's regulatory board, not available in English whatever it says on the home page.Added on: 08-Dec-2007 | hits: 83

Terra Alta
In the west of the province of Tarragona, the county of Terra Alta is, as the name says, highlands, rolling (where the vines and olives are grown) or dramatically craggy or mountainous. It is sparsely populated, dotted with villages and small towns (more or less one per valley), its capital is Gandesa, and as the denominació d'origen Terra Alta is a wine-growing region of interest. Its history has been long and fretful, most recently as the site of the bloodiest of the Spanish Civil War battles, the Battle of the Ebro. The link goes to an exceptionally well made regional tourist board website covering the area's landscapes (its main attraction), routes (including, nicely, a Peace Route around the most important places in the Battle of the Ebro), cycling routes, towns and villages, history and culture, festivals and traditions, gastronomy, restaurants and lodgings.Added on: 08-Dec-2007 | hits: 85

Terra Alta Official Website
Included for completeness - it is only available in Catalan and is, in any case, too bureaucratic to be interesting.Added on: 08-Dec-2007 | hits: 100
