Yecla
Apart from being a wine region, Yecla is an isolated, medium-sized town in the mountainous north of the province of Murcia. It is not really a touristy kind of place, but has an attractive Plaza Mayor, a basiliica with a weird, blue-and-white, candy-striped dome, a great ruined Moorish castle, and one of the most siingular museums I have ever come across - the Museum of "El Greco" Replicas contains over 70 copies of El Greco's paintings by a local artist, Juan Albert Roses, who took twenty years to do them, visiting the originals in situ.Added on: 10-Dec-2007 | hits: 170

CRDO Yecla
Yecla is a small wine region on a plateau in the north of the province of Murcia (between the Jumilla and Alicante wine regions), of harsh climate - immensely hot summers and extreme cold in winter - an awful lot of sunshine (3,000 hours a year), almost no rainfall to speak of and poor, lime-bearing soil under a thin, porous, sandy topsoil. There are two subregions, Campo Arriba and Campo Abajo. DO Yecla produces mostly red wine, from the red Monastrell grape which seems to thrive in these hostile conditions, at least when pampered by the local viticulturists. Yecla wine can be extremely good, even more so in terms of value for money, being smooth, full-bodied, intensely aromatic and of great character - those produced by the firm Bodegas Castaño are especially worth looking out for. The link goes to the website of DO Yecla's regulatory board.Added on: 10-Dec-2007 | hits: 165
