Vinhos Verdes - CVRVV
The Denominação de Origem Controlado Vinhos Verdes corresponds to the Entre-Douro-e-Minho region, i.e., from north of Oporto up to the border with Spain. It has six areas, Braga (the heart of the region, though the regulatory board is based in Oporto), Lima (Viana do Castelo), Amarante, Basto, Monção, and Penafiel. As a type of wine, it is slightly sparkling (the technical word is "petillant"), usually white (though rosé amd even red vinhos verdes exist), and the name "green wine" refers to the fact that it is made from not very sweet grapes which means the wine is made very quickly and no aging process is required. The result is low in alcohol, light, refreshing and eminently drinkable, as long as it is served well chilled, and vinho verde is much enjoyed within Portugal itself, only 10% of the production being exported. Monção
Monção is a municipality of some 30-odd parishes in the north of the Minho region, in the Viana do Castelo district, bordering with Spain. It is an attractive place, but included here as it is home to an interesting variation on Vinho Verde called Vinho Alberinho (being made from the Alberiño grape, much used in neighbouring Galicia). It is stronger than most Vinho Verde and more characteristically flavoured.Added on: 14-Dec-2007 | hits: 70
