Atapuerca

The little town of Atapuerca in the province of Burgos has one of the most important archaeological sites in Europe, especially significant for the remains of early hominids found there, including one which they estimate at over a million years old (if this proves to be true, it will make it the oldest in Europe and would mean the anthropological theory books would need rewriting). Indeed, its main sites - Gran Dolina and Sima de los Huesos (the Bone Pit) - are a ceaseless source of anthropological discovery, at a rate of about about one major revelation announced every year. Atapuerca is on the Way of Saint James and is set in the pleasant hills of the Sierra de Atapuerca named after it, and is not far from Santo Domingo de Silos Abbey, home to the chart-topping Gregorian-chant-singing monks and a tremendously important mediaeval library. The link goes to the official web site, which not only contains heaps of information but is as brilliant an example of exactly how high-tech should be used on a web site as you will find - news, research, a documentary and more. Magnificent.

Ayuntamiento de Atapuerca

Atapuerca is only a wee little place and it is not surprising that even the tourist information on this municipal website is only available in Spanish - note that visits to the archaeological park and the digs need to be reserved in advance.

Atapuerca at the AMNH

Subsite of the American Museum of Natural History in New York dedicated to Atapuerca. It doesn't contain much you won't find on the official site, but you might find it easier to navigate.
