Tavira is the most important town on the East Algarve, a thriving resort in summer but without the masses that can spoil the Algarve experience elsewhere. This is at least partly because its beach is a few kilometres downstream on the Ilha de Tavira, a large sandy island with an appealing campsite and nudist beaches, part of the Rio Formosa nature reserve.
