Link profile: Guimarães

Category: Start / Great Cities of Portugal / Guimarães
A very historic city, Guimarães became the first capital of the new country of Portugal some time between 1128 and 1143, depending on your criterion, after the county of the same name wrested independence from the Kingdom of León at the Battle of São Mamede. It is thus venerated as the cradle of the nation, has a fabulous 10th-century castle, is chock-full of interesting buildings and monuments, and even has an entertaining nightlife. The link goes to its municipal website which has some fine tourist information, even available in English, though the site does not work properly in any browser except IE.
