Alcoutim is the most north-easterly town in the Algarve, upriver from Vila Real de Santo Antonio on the west bank of the Guadiana, facing San Lucar del Guadiana in Spain on the other bank. Alcoutim is an attractive, rural place, with a few buildings of note including a fourteenth-century castle.
