Santiponce is a town of some 7,000 inhabitants a few kilometres northwest of the city of Seville. It sits on the ruins of the Roman city of Italica, which was the first built outside the Italian peninsula, by Scipio Africanus in 206 BC (the Monastery of Saint Isidore of Seville, also within the municipality, is of interest as well).
