Link profile: Ribeira Sacra

Category: Start / Spain and its Regions / Galicia / Ourense / Ribeira Sacra
There are two Ribeira Sacras: the historical area around the confluence of the Rivers Sil and Miño, overlapping the provinces of Ourense and Lugo, and the wine denominación de origen which more or less coincides with it geographically. As the former, it's a beautiful, rural area of mountains and valleys, castles and monasteries, ravines and woods, whereas as a D.O. it is surprisingly new, not much more than twenty years old, which is amazing considering that wine has been made there for something like two thousand years (typically Galician wine, where the red is testimonial, this is white wine country, especially made from the Albariño grape. And local wine, for 90% of the production never leaves Galicia). The link goes to the schizophrenic website of, on the one hand, the regulating board of the wine region, this part being entertaining and informative but not available in English, and on the other, a tourism consortium for the area, this part being a tourist information site which is also entertaining and informative (and useful) and is available in English.
