Link profile: Terra Alta

Category: Start / Spain and its Regions / Catalonia / Tarragona / Terra Alta
In the west of the province of Tarragona, the county of Terra Alta is, as the name says, highlands, rolling (where the vines and olives are grown) or dramatically craggy or mountainous. It is sparsely populated, dotted with villages and small towns (more or less one per valley), its capital is Gandesa, and as the denominació d'origen Terra Alta is a wine-growing region of interest. Its history has been long and fretful, most recently as the site of the bloodiest of the Spanish Civil War battles, the Battle of the Ebro. The link goes to an exceptionally well made regional tourist board website covering the area's landscapes (its main attraction), routes (including, nicely, a Peace Route around the most important places in the Battle of the Ebro), cycling routes, towns and villages, history and culture, festivals and traditions, gastronomy, restaurants and lodgings.
