The main aim of this site is to promote Cantabria's casas rurales, but it contains enough information about places of interest in the region to merit attention.

Cantabria is riddled with caves, many of which hold examples of prehistoric cave art, Altamira being only the most famous of them. Those which can be visited, together with Altamira, five caves in Asturias and three in the Basque Country, are now the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Cave of Altamira and Paleolithic Cave Art of Northern Spain." The link goes to a splendid subsite of Cultura de Cantabria which, unlike its parent, is available in English.

A semi-private organization promoting a number of Cantabria's more striking tourist attractions, including the Fuente Dé cable car up into the Picos de Europa, the Alto Campoo ski resort, and the Cabárceno Nature Reserve-cum-Safari Park (main draw, bears in semi-wilderness). Comillas was an important whaling port. It has important ecclesiastical associations, especially its Pontifical University, and the gardens of El Capricho (the folly) are one of the most important works by Gaudi which can be seen outside Catalonia.

The Cantabrian government's Department of Tourism, Culture and Sports has three first-class websites, one for each of its areas of responsibility. The sports site is not very relevant to Spain and Portugal for Visitors, the tourism site is linked to below, and this is the link to the culture site, which is irreproachable, except that it is only available in Spanish.

The Cantabria Regional Tourist Board's website keeps changing its name - it was Cantabria Gran Reserva for a time, then became Cantabria Infinita... It is a fine site in every other way, especially good on specific areas and places, but also coverinig sights, festivals, hotels, history, active tourism and so on, and even has a fine recipe collection.
