The Alcarria region is a plains area which spills over into Cuenca and Madrid, but the largest part of it corresponds to Guadalajara. Historically, it is an extremely backward area, though nowadays it has become modernized to a certain extent by rural tourism and to a lesser degree by cityfolk moving back out to the country. It is famous for its honey and for having been the subject of a travel book by Nobel-prize-winner Camilo José Cela at a time when the genre was never touched in Spanish literature.
