Access to Cabrera
By: John Ross 2004.12.31

A boat (la golondrina) leaves from Colonia de Sant Jordi in the south-east of Majorca every morning (in summer) at 09:30, returning at 18:00. I have heard that lunch is included in the price, but cannot confrm this or offer much more information. The return trip is supposed to include a visit to Sa Cova Blava (the blue cave), where excursionists can swim, suffused in the odd blue light reflected from the cave walls. More information: Excursions a Cabrera: tel. (+34) 971 649034.

Another golondrina leaves from Portopetro in the municipality of Santanyi, but I have even less information about this, except that the journey is longer (1 hour 10 minutes). More information: Cruceros Llevant: tel. (+34) 971 657012.

Remember that access to Cabrera is restricted to 200 visitors a day (300 in August), and prior booking is recommended for both of the above.

If you wish to visit Cabrera in your own (or rented) boat, you will need to obtain a permit from the park authorities beforehand (see below for contact details), and again, planning is recommended: a maximum of 50 boats are allowed at any one time. Note that to protect the posidonia meadows, boats may be required to anchor to a system of buoys. The following kinds of permits are issued:
Autorización de navegación, sailing permit (valid for up to a month, but not including overnight anchorage).
Autorización de pernocta overnight anchorage (issued for one night only in July and August, two nights in September and seven nights for the rest of the year).

Furthermore, if you wish to moor in Cabrera's harbour, you will need to obtain a permit from the Military Governor (see below).

Scuba diving is also only allowed with the appropriate permit. Diving is currently permitted in two coves on Cabrera: these places, like the anchorage points, may be changed at the discretion of the park authorities.
