Alcázar, Seville
Full name, the Real Alcázar, for it is a royal palace, the oldest in Europe.
An alcázar is a fortified palace, or a fortress used as a palatial residence. Seville's Alcázar is not one but a whole series of palaces and gardens, begun in 1181 by the Almohades, construction continuing over the next 500 years. Most of the Moorish-type arches and ornamentation are actually Mudéjar, respecting the original intent and principles behind Arabic architecture and decoration, such as the Coranic exhortation not to compete with the Creator for perfection.
