Palacio Real, Madrid

Madrid's Royal Palace was built on the site of the old Arab Alcázar, destroyed by fire. From the outset, it was intended to be a demonstration of the power and splendour of the Spanish crown, and boasts any number of superlatives. It is the largest palace in Western Europe, has more rooms than any other in Europe, has the oldest arms collection outside Vienna, is older than most (notably Buckingham Palace, a mere pipsqueak in comparison), and even has the only complete Stradivarius string quartet in the world. Originally commissioned by Philip V, work on it of all kinds continued with his two sons, Ferdinand VI and Charles III, its first occupant and Spain's maximum exponent and example of enlightened despotism.
