My wife and I were thinking of selling up here and starting a B&B in Spain, but we have seen on other forums that a lot of people seem to fail at it. We don't quite see why, though. Anyone have any idea?

I expect there are lots of different reasons - not everyone is cut out to run a business, and a B&B is a lot less straightforward than it might appear. Spanish bureaucracy probably doesn't help - I think you are supposed to register as a tourist establishment, which is not all that easy, and you will have all the usual requirements as to number of fire extinguishers and that kind of thing. Where I think most people fail, though (and this is just as true about starting a corner shop in England), is simply not doing their homework - you can't make a B&B work where there is no demand or if you can't tell people about it because you don't know the language well enough. And lots of people choose some lovely but remote place, expect Brits to fight their way to it, and are then disappointed when they don't.
