We want to spend about ten days to a fortnight in Spain towards the end of August, beginning of September, and are not sure about two things:
Where to be? We'd like to be near the coast, but we plan on renting a car, so would like to take in some sights like the Alhambra, but we understand that the beaches on the Costa Tropical are not that great. So where?
What kind of accommodation? We thought of a villa, but they seem to be terrifically expensive at that time of year. Can anyone recommend self-catering type accommodation?

What's the matter with the beaches on the Costa Tropical? If I were you, I'd be thinking about somewhere like Salobreña, though I don't specifically know any self-catering accommodation there.
