Can you help? :)

I am emailing on behalf of 8 young women who are looking for a holiday in Ibiza, July 19 to August 5, 2005. We are all doing training in San Carlos during this period so we need accommodation relatively close to the Es Cana/Santa Eulalia area.

Before we book a trip to Ibiza we want to make sure we are in the right resort and know about the best beach in the area. Last year my girlfriends and I stayed at the Jet Hotel near Playa D'en Bossa. We know this kind of beach and hotel just doesn't exist in the family-dominated area of Es Cana/Santa Eulalia, but thats fine since we need relative calm for our course work. However, we still want to find the the beach that is 'most like' or most similar to Playa D'en Bossa and Salines and the funnest hotel in the Es Cana/Santa Eulalia area. Can you help?

Its ok if the beach is hardly like Bossa or Las Salinas and the hotel is boring compared to Jet. The point is to get as well placed as possible given the drawbacks of the area.

Our wishlist:

Hotel
-we want to be around fellow young partiers; a hotel with lots of girls like us (and guys!) and not too many families or old people that will feel we are disturbing them

Beach
-a beach with a bar(s) that play music during the day; a beach that might be considered the 'in' beach for the young
-a crowded beach so we don't get stared at so obviously for being topless; we'd like to be around many young people that have an open mind for a group of 8 British girls who are always topless on the beach

We've heard that the Club Punta Arabi only German or is it possible to get service in English?

I should get to my point. I know its tough to get this in the north east... we're not asking for perfection just the 'best possible placement' under the circumstances. Do you know which hotel and beach we should choose in the Es Cana/Santa Eulalia region?

ps. is Cala Martina beach the busiest and best for young people in that area?

Well, that's put the colour back in these weary cheeks of mine and a rakish glint in my eye: eight healthy young ladies on the lookout for some serious action and anxious to get topless at the first opportunity is exactly the kind of cause I can identify with. Unfortunately, I don't have much experience of that particular area, so none of the following can be said to be first-hand gen (but I will point out that Santa Eulalia is only a quarter of an hour's taxi ride away from Ibiza Town, and San Antonio and other places of partying worth can't be more than half an hour away. And I believe "disco buses" connect S. Eul. and Ibiza Town every couple of hours at night ). I have put a few (very few, sorry) links in a section on Santa Eulalia ( here ) and will add more as I find them, so check back.

Going topless - I really wouldn't worry about getting stared at - this may be the most family-oriented corner of Ibiza, but it is still Ibiza (don't forget to send the pics in to Spain and Portugal for Visitors afterwards 8-) ).

Nightlife - Santa Eulalia's Guaran? may not be Space, but looks quite satisfactory as a nocturnal hangout (plus, the music on its website is cooler than that of more venerable establishments, and the website design is by the same people as Eden's). Disco Kancela in Es Cana might be OK as well. And I would be very surprised if Punta Arabi didn't have English-speaking waitpeople.

Hotel - I can't recommend a hotel, you'll have to look around yourself (Holidays Uncovered and Holiday Truths, linked to from the Spain and Portugal for Visitors Accommodation page, are useful sources of information, even if you have to think backwards - if people are complaining about the noise, maybe that's your ideal haunt).

Beach - I don't know whether Cala Martina is the hippest beach in the area, but Ibiza Spotlight says it is well endowed with beach bars and the like, so you could do worse.

Feel free to say thank you, and keep the thread going as long as you like, this is the kind of stuff to keep the troops happy. What are you training in, as a matter of interest?

Nothing wrong with a little rakishness from time to time. I suspect there will be plenty in Ibiza and more than just a subtle glint in the eye or rosy cheeks.

We'll see.

I should say thank you for your info, John. This is the sort of thing a small group of hens need in advance planning.

The training is Yamuna Body Rolling. Stop smirking!

Unregistered User I have no idea what Yamuna Body Rolling is, but it sounds sexy as hell. That isn't a smirk, it's a leer.

I ran a Google search to find out what "Yamuna Body Rolling" was - no wonder you thought I would be smirking. Just don't tell me you're going to do Hands On Therapeutic Body Rolling, I would have to go for a liedown.

Unregistered User Go have a lie down but put a body-rolling ball under your back. It feels great! :-P

Just kidding, I sincerely appreciate your help John!

Can I ask one last question? No point asking because I'm just going to ask my question anyway.

Right, back to Ibiza. Issue: the size of the island. Obviously its small but I wonder if its still a fair hike from Es Cana to Ibiza Town and San Antonio, etc. I'm thinking of getting a 100cc scooter but I'm wondering if I need a car instead, not just because of safety but because of the distances. What is your take on it?

Is a scooter enough or do I need a car to make getting around more feasible?

El

Hi, Ellen. Well, on the one hand, if you run "Santa Eulalia" to "Ibiza" through the Via Michelin route calculator (you can get to it from the Spain and Portugal for Visitors "Moving Around" page), it tells you it is a quarter of an hour's drive. Even if it takes you twice as long by scooter, that's only half an hour. But on the other, and I don't want to sound like your mother, but you're right, safety is an issue, especially but not only if you want to move around after dark. A big issue - Ibiza will be full of irresponsible kids on bikes, or worse, borrowing their dads' cars. I wouldn't feel safe on a scooter, myself. And just so I don't sound like your mom, how are you going to score? I mean, scooters have their place in the scheme of things, but they're not exactly designed for pulling, are they? You're going with a group - couldn't you club together for wheels?

Unregistered User John, you're a sweetheart and an honourable person for being concerned. No matter how protective you get if you throw a little rakishness in the mix you'll never have to worry about sounding like a mom.

As to the scooter. True, its not great for pulling but its also pure med recreation during the day. Other than a convertible Peugeot 306, which requires a blood donation in order to afford it, a scooter is the only way to worship the island gods properly.

I suppose the only answer is to get both. But maybe an economical car. And yes, splitting the costs is helpful.

I just wanted to make sure I knew the dangers of a scooter in Ibiza. Night time is perilous. Gotcha. What about using a scooter during the day? Should be much better, huh?

By the way, your site is pretty much friggin sweet with all the info and links. Its fabulous, its awesome, its incredible <in a Napoleon Dynamite accent>. 8-)

Unregistered User Dammit I sent that message too quickly. I didn't get your point immediately. I realise you already answered my question about the "safety [of a scooter being] an issue, [*]especially but not only[*] if you want to move around after dark".

This is becoming a difficult decision. Oh, but I have an update. We're getting a large van for the group. I still want that damn scooter though. I guess I'll have to throw my cards on the table and see what happens.

<sound clip from "The Gambler" begins playing in the background>

Ahh... the trials and tribulations of planning an Ibizan holiday. Such a cross to bear.

El ;-)

If I know anything at all about women, which I very possibly don't, that means you have made up your mind to get a scooter. Fair 'nuff, I sympathise with that desire to worship the island gods. But do be careful.

That "island gods" expression led me to something quite interesting. You may or may not know that the first inhabitants of Ibiza were the Phoenicians, six hundred and something BC, but I wasn't aware that they gave the place its name, as "Ibosim," the "Island of the God Bes." So I went to find out about this little fellow and, gosh, he's just my kind of chap - god of pleasure, music and dance, the Phoenician version of Bacchus (and a hideous little dwarf, but no-one's perfect). Even juicier, he was depicted (by the Egyptians, from whom the Phoenicians borrowed him) "quite differently from the other gods, who were shown in profile in two-dimensional pictures. Bes instead appears full-face in an ithyphallic style, with a long tongue, bow legs and some feline body parts." You'll have to look up "ithyphallic" for yourself, I can't explain as there might be children reading this.

A van sounds like fun. I was having visions of you all crammed into a topless (there's that word again) beach buggy and I was getting hot flushes. Vans are OK, nothing upsetting about a van (unless you say "in the back of..." oh god the medication's wearing off...) :-P
