Hi, my family comes from Peru, and I was rooting around the Net to see if I could find out what our surname means. It seems that the town of C?ceres (in Extremadura, Spain) used to be called "Hinz Qazris" by the Arabs, but no-one can tell me what this means in Arabic.

That's because it's only half Arabic. "Hinz" means "wall" (city wall) in Arabic, but "Qazris" is a kind of Arabic form of the Latin word "castris" from "castro" (town or fort). So the two together mean "walled town."

It ain't that I'm that expert as a linguist - I found this thread in Spanish: http://boards4.melodysoft.com/app?ID=raices2000&msg=391.
