Electrical appliances

Unregistered User I know we'll need adaptors, but apart from that is there any reason not to use British electrical appliances in Spain or Portugal?

Not that I know of, though your TV won't work here. Spain and Portugal both have a 220 V 50 Hz mains system (I think even the remotest areas have been switched over from the old 110 V system). That means your iron won't get quite as hot and your electric kettle will take a few seconds more to boil water than in the UK. Your telly won't work because the number of lines on the screen is different: I have heard that it is possible for a technician to adjust this, but I have never met anyone who has had it done.

Ah, but don't buy things in Spain/Portugal and then plug them in in the UK - they might burn out or worse.

I do wish you people would put some kind of signature when you post anonymously, or better still register - it is really difficult to tell if you are the same person who started this thread or someone completely different. :-x

But to answer the question, instead of three square pins, Spanish / Portuguese plugs have two round pins, and usually a metal strip on either side which is the earth connection. But the pins come in different sizes, as over here they wire lighting and power circuits differently. Your best bet is to buy what I think they call "universal" or "continental" adaptors. :-)
