Hello John, I've just got back from Es Cana in Ibiza and thought I'd give you a quick report! Although the resort was stunningly beautiful - the view over the bay from my hotel room was amazing - and Ibiza as an island was fantastic, I'm afraid the general feel of the resort was less than desirable. I'm sure I've never been anywhere quite so 'Brits Abroad', where it seems drinks are ordered by shouting loudly in English and pointing, football shirts are the only acceptable dress and children run amok with no parents in sight. Oh dear - I'm sounding really old now! Being ibiza, we were expecting some fairly lively nightlife and some nice seafront wine bars to drink sangria to eclectic music whilst watching the sun go down. Sadly the bars (with one or two notable exceptions - the Australian-run Ranch bar, Apache was fantastic fun ) and entertainment consisted primarily of people singing along to backing tracks (I'm atill trying to put the particularly disturbing Britney/Kylie tribute act out of my mind!!), bingo and play your cards right. Classy! Food available in the resort catered mostly for the English taste, so was mostly burger and chips, all day breakfasts etc. I found myself craving bookshops, art galleries and wine bars by the end of the week!! However the weather was stunning, the sangria cheap, plentiful and extremely nice, the beach beautiful, the views breathtaking, the hotel comfortable and clean and our trips to other parts of the island proved that there's some fantastic things to see there! In summary, I'd definately go back to Ibiza - but definately NOT to Es Cana! Hope you're well, Rai xxx |

Sorry you were disappointed with Es Cana, Raiann, but thanks for the gen (and who knows, it might even be useful to someone who is looking for exactly what you didn't like about the place). While I understand that that "more British than Britain" atmosphere was not what you wanted to find, personally I find it quite entertaining and of not a little anthropological interest: the first time I visited Benidorm, I was tickled to see "Paella and Chips" advertised everywhere. At least it hasn't put you off the country. Perhaps you'd get more out of the odd citybreak visit - Granada is only 1 h 50 min away from Stansted, for example. Or Bilbao, where I have just spent a few days, which used to be one of the ugliest, least visitworthy places on Earth but is now a historic but modern city with all the culture you could possibly want (and great nightlife, to boot). | |
