Global
Access
A splendid website dedicated to travel for the disabled, especially
wheechair users. While the links section is excellent and
practical, perhaps the most interesting part of the site is
its Travel Archives, trip reports provided by disabled people:
Portugal, Seville, Barcelona and the Pyrenees are some of
the destinations covered. In addition, on the same page you
will find a few articles on travel and health, insurance and
other relevant matters.
Accessible
Europe
From Durant Imboden's awesome Europe for Visitors, though
Spain and Portugal are covered somewhat cursorily.
Accessible
Vacation Home Exchange
A splendid idea, at least in theory. You have spent months
and good money making your home accessible, so why not swap
with others who have done the same? After all, who better
understands your requirements? Over 170 homes to choose from,
they claim, though a search found only three in Spain.
Accessible
Hotel Guide
From a personal homepage in Spanish calling itself the Cotton
Club, which is a point in its favour, I think. The most informative
part of this guide is the "Servicios Especiales"
listed for each hotel - if anyone has trouble understanding
the legend (under "Significado de los Iconos"),
they should feel free to contact me using the Feedback form.
Tenerife
Accessible Travel
A European-Union-backed initiative of the regional government
of Tenerife, this is a data base covering the accessibility
of hotels, public buildings, car parks... In other words,
practically everywhere.
Travel
Guide for Tourists with Disabilities - Spain
According to its parent site, this European Union document
is based on the premise that "travel and tourism has
progressively become a social right." It may be a little
out of date (the currency is still the peseta), but its 44
pages (pdf - you will need Acrobat Reader) contain a great
deal of information, addresses, contacts, lists of accessible
accommodation and facilities, etc.
Turimás
The Spanish part of the Access Europe network. Unfortunately,
at the time of writing, the site has almost no information
in English and precious little in Spanish.
Tour Operators / Companies Specializing in Disability
Travel
The following companies are owned and run by people with
disabilities. They may not specialize in Spain, but offer
packages there.
Assistance
Travel Service
Tony Reeve's company offers accessible flights and accommodation
for people with all kinds of disablity, including the deaf
and blind.
CanBeDone
Although the website is clumsy to use, Jackie Scott's company
offers a variety of holidays, including Spain. Coach tours,
cruises and some interesting last-minute offers.
