Alcalá de Henares, the Roman Complutum, was the first city specifically founded as a university, by Cardinal Cisneros in 1499, and is a world heritage city for that reason. It is also the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes. Now a dormitory town for Madrid, it makes a very agreeable excursion from there, although it is worth visiting in its own right.

Alcalá de Henares Best of the Net
The city council's site, and excellent it is too, even if the English is a bit wobbly in places. Its design is gorgeous, and the seven or eight options under "Your City" provide more and more information the further you get in. I really liked "The Storks of Alcalá" myself.

Alcalá de Henares - UNESCO
The UNESCO explanation of why the University and Historic Precinct of Alcalá de Henares were given world heritage status. Short and sweet.

Alcine
Alcalá's film festival, focussed on short film.

Casa Natal de Cervantes
Unfortunately Spanish-only, this page gives a nice description of the house questionably considered to be Cervantes' birthplace, now turned into a museum. It has been turned into a representation of a typical middle-class house of the time. Whether or not it is authentic, it is an interesting and entertaining visit which I recommend.

Getting to Alcalá - from SoftGuide Madrid
With a brief description of the sights in the town, as well.

Guía de Alcalá de Henares
Slightly odd, Spanish-only guide from an events-organizing company.

University of Alcalá
Spanish-only site for this most venerable institution.
