There are no fewer than four national parks in the Canary Islands - Timanfaya on Lanzarote, Garajonay on La Gomera, La Caldera de Taburiente on La Palma and El Teide on Tenerife. And the activities available to you include walking, cycling, sailing, surfing and windsurfing, horseriding... even camel trekking.

SPV Pages

Outdoor Tenerife
Almost 45% of the island is protected in one way or another, between national parks, natural parks and other types of nature reserve.

Teide National Park
The most important of Tenerife's nature reserves, if not in all the Canaries.

The Canary Islands - National Parks
With four of Spain's thirteen national parks, the Canary Islands are particularly well provided. Unfortunately, this is an old-fashioned, messy site, and the English version does not work properly.

Climbing the Teide
Access to the Teide is restricted to a certain extent, to reduce the environmental impact. This page tells you all you need to know - how to get a summit permit, the route, the climb... From Mike Reid's 'Fellwalker' site (I was tickled by the assertion that 'the path is well within the capacity of any British hillwalker,' as though Gauls, Teutons and Yankees might find it hard going).

Mr Walker's Spanish & Portuguese Island Selection
Mr Walker's suggestions for walks on most of the Canary Islands, Madeira and Mallorca. A little perfunctory, but entertaining.

Pico de Teide
The Teide is the highest mountain in Spain, even if it is in Africa. It can be a rough climb, according to Ann Bowker, who specializes in "the world's notable but easy mountains."

SurfCanarias
This was a promising site, covering all (I think, I am not an adept) forms of surfing, from longboard to flysurfing, with a section on windsurfing. It now seems to have gone missing, or at least to be permanently in constuction, so don't bother clicking, I'm just leaving the link here in case they do get their act together.

Tenerife and La Gomera - a Walking Holiday
A personal account, with some good photos and a few splendid ones.

Walking in Tenerife
An account by Henk Nouws, the Trails Database man. Improved by being written several years after the occasion and Henk's English giving the impression he was tired at the moment of writing ("We used a German guide, which we lost").
