Diving in Spain and Portugal |
| The climate and the relative calm of the waters in the Algarve and Mediterranean make diving one of the most popular activities for visitors to Portugal and, especially, Spain. Majorca is another important centre, and the Atlantic but warm waters of the Canary Islands, particularly Tenerife, and the Azores also attract divers. In fact, diving is possible in most places on Spain's costas, and many dive centres exist to meet the demand, almost all being thoroughly professional. |
| In fact, most dive centres in Spain are PADI centres (PADI is the Professional Association of Diving Instructors, "the worlds largest recreational diving membership organization"), and those that aren't should have an equivalent certification. I have reorganized this diving section on a geographical basis, on the grounds that if you are going to be in Majorca, the information on diving in Tenerife is not of very great interest to you. If you still haven't made up your mind where to go, start by looking at the Spain and Portugal for Visitors diving links page, where you will find some general information, overviews and comparisons. Diving
in the Algarve These are not the only places in Spain where you can dive, but they are the most popular. Bear in mind that you will need permits and in special cases, like the Medas Islands and other nature reserves, licences. |
