Mediterranean Blue

Running west from Lisbon is a stretch of coast which has long been popular with ex-pats. Estoril itself is described on the local tourist board's website as the "Playground of Kings," failing to mention that the royalty in question was usually fleeing from its enraged subjects. The other main attractions are the civilized but cheerful resort of Cascais and, up in the hills, the historic towns of Sintra and Mafra.

Links

Cascais - from Portugal-Info
Plenty of material here: photos, weather, accommodation...

Cascais Line
Unless you have the use of a car, the coastal railway line is probably the most convenient way of moving around in this part of the world.

Casino Estoril
Said to be the largest casino in Europe. Its website gives the impression that slot-machines rather than roulette tables are the main attraction.

Estoril
For all its fame as an aristocratic resort, the town of Estoril itself can be rather dull. This site has a lot to explore, though (come here for the best tourist information on Cascais, as well). It is well designed and entertaining, with a lot of information about the places nearby and very attractive photographs.

Estoril Coast - from Portugal Virtual
When Portugal Virtual is good, it is very good indeed. Faultless information and a cheerfully illustrated map.

Mafra
The main attraction of Mafra is the enormous royal palace/convent (if that reminds you of El Escorial near Madrid it is no coincidence) built there at the beginning of the eighteenth century. This municipal site was under reconstruction the last time I visited it...

Mafra.net
..while this municipal site is Portuguese-only.

Sintra
A winsome site which seems to have been put together by a school, about the World Heritage City of Sintra. The shaky English is forgivable, say I.

Hotels
Hotel Club
This booking service covers a very wide range of places in both Spain and Portugal.

Venere.com
An on-line booking service with great discounts.

Car Hire
Auto Europe
Car rental, motor homes, minibuses... And an interesting short-term lease option.
