Mediterranean Blue

The cities of Estremadura are islands in the sweeping steppes that make up this most rural of Spain's regions. It is the land of the conquistadors and many of its towns and cities, Caceres, Trujillo (barely more than a village), Guadalupe, Badajoz... reflect this, being built with the riches brought back from the New World.

Badajoz

Because of its location, most people see Badajoz on the way from Spain to Portugal or vice versa, but it has sights to keep a visitor happily busy for an afternoon or even a whole day.

Badajoz
The municipal website.

Badajoz
An amateurish web page, with good information and lots of photos, but unfortunately in Spanish only.

Cáceres

Cáceres
The Spanish-only city council site. Click "Paseo Turístico" for an OK virtual visit.

Cáceres
Cáceres is the most captivating town in Estremadura, a medieval city made wealthy by the plunder from the Indies. This is a "World Heritage Cities in Spain" site, which means it is good on monuments and photos and less so on amenities. Don't believe the bit about the "peace, quietness and temperance within its inns and restaurants;" Cáceres is a university town and as lively as anywhere in Spain.

Cáceres - from Alexander in Spain
Some nice photos, from an account of Master Alexander's holidays in Spain. The photo of "a stork" next to that of "another stork" says volumes.

Guadalupe
A town rather than a city, and a tiny one at that, but the Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Guadalupe gives it a grandiose feel.

Guadalupe
The UNESCO description of this World Heritage Site.

Mérida

Mérida - Augusta Emerita - was once the capital of the Roman province of Lusitania and is now the capital of Estremadura. The things not to miss are the Roman amphitheatre, especially if you coincide with the open-air Classical Theatre Festival in July and August, and the Museo Nacional de Arte Romano, which is magnificent.

Mérida
This is a good site, unfortunately only in Spanish.

Mérida - a personal home page
A really remarkable web site put together by someone called Francis, unfortunately only in Spanish, but with fabulous photos and graphics.

Plasencia

Plasencia is a small, charming, rather sleepy medieval city, with seemingly countless casas señoriales (roughly "manor houses," but sometimes small palaces).

Palencia
This historic city in Old Castile, between Valladolid and Burgos, has a certain reputation for being sleepy and backward. The municipal tourist site is fine, but Spanish-only.

Plasencia
An excellent site from a web design company, dealing with both city and province, which scores over the municipal tourist site both in design quality and in having an English-language version.

Trujillo

Important as the birthplace of a number of conquistadors, particularly Francisco Pizarro, Trujillo is a small country town with an unbelievable concentration of monuments and storks nesting on every steeple.

Trujillo
The municipal site looks like someone's school project but has some great content. Spanish-only, unfortunately.

Trujillo - from The Alexander Home Page
It is reassuring to know that "the Alexander Home Page is opposed to the wholesale destruction of civilizations."
