Annual
Horror and Fantasy Film Festival of Donostia
Soon to hold its 12th edition, this, the younger brother of
the San Sebastian International Film Festival, has taken over
the niche the Sitges festival used to fill.
Barcelona
International Erotic Film Festival
One of the most important events of its type in Europe. Appropriately,
an entertaining but decidedly adults-only website.
Fantasporto
- the Oporto International Film Festival
Specializing in the fantasy and science-fiction genres and
coming up to its twenty-second edition in 2002.
Gijón
International Film Festival
Like Sitges and its film festival with a SF and horror theme,
Gijón used to have a lovely little festival dedicated to film
noir, which they have turned into just another second-rate
international festival. Who needs it?
LesGaiCine
Madrid
To all intents and purposes, a Spanish-only site for this
gay film festival held in November.
Mostra
de Cinema Llatinoamericà de Lleida
This festival dedicated to Latin American films is only in
its seventh edition, but has already acquired a certain prestige.
Spanish-only site, at least for the moment.
San
Sebastian International Film Festival
The most important film festival in Spain. This year, 2001,
with a new festival director at the helm, Claude Chabrol heading
the jury and a Donostia prize to go to Julie Andrews, it looks
set to be highly varied.
Seminci
- the Valladolid International Film Festival
Another veteran among Spanish and indeed European film festivals,
though not as well known internationally as San Sebastian.
This year with a retrospective on Visconti.
Sitges
International Film Festival of Catalonia
Although not as likeable as when it was a cult affair dedicated
to SF, fantasy and horror films, the Sitges Festival is a
most enjoyable occasion and still retains traces of its origins.
