CLUBS (cont.):
CELTA DE VIGO
TOP
Real
Club Celta de Vigo
Celta de Vigo came to Madrid a couple of years ago for
a cup final and hordes of Galicians hit the town. They
treated it like a picnic and it was a pleasure to see
so many people enjoying themselves. This is the official
site and cheerful enough, as well. Spanish only.
DEPORTIVO
DE LA CORUÑA TOP
Canal
Deportivo
The official site of the Depor' at least has
a certain amount of imagination. Click DX VIRTUAL for
a virtual look around the stadium. Spanish only.
Deportivo-La-Coruña.com
Billing itself as the "International Depor Website,"
this hugely slick portal-style site "made by several
Depor fans" should keep any enthusiast of this
club happy for hours. Look for the most entertaining
stuff under "Goodies." Excellent, and in English.
ESPANYOL
(R.C.D. ESPANYOL) TOP
R.C.D.
Espanyol de Barcelona
Barcelona's other team, the Espanyol, attracts
fewer, but no less passionate fans than F.C. Barcelona,
Barça. The official site is perfectly
adequate. In Spanish and Catalan.
LAS PALMAS
TOP
U.D.
Las Palmas
The official site of Las Palmas football club has a
pleasing, thoughtful design and all the contents you
could expect: news, forum, chat... Click "ver animación"
to see a well-made but unnecessary introductory animation
or "entrar" to go straight in: considerate
of them to give us the choice.
MALAGA
TOP
Málaga
C.F.
This official site is adequate, but not very inspired
or inspiring, to tell the truth. Spanish only.
MALLORCA
TOP
R.C.D.
Mallorca
Mallorca's most important team is going through a good
patch, although they came close to demotion in 2001-2002.
The official site is quite likeable, and one of the
few available in English.
OSASUNA
TOP
Club
Atlético Osasuna
Osasuna is the club of Pamplona. The most intersting
thing I found on this official site is the "Parte
Médico," medical reports on all the more
important injuries suffered by players. Spanish only.
Club
Atlético Osasuna
A fansite which crashed my browser. In spite of the
"Click Here" on the entrance page, in Spanish
only.
PORTO
TOP
F.C.
Porto
There used to be an English-language version of this
site, but it seems to have disappeared. On the other
hand, the site has greatly improved in all other respects.
RACING SANTANDER
TOP
Racing Santander
- Official Site
Note that "Racing" is pronounced "ra-thing":
"ra-," as in "cat" without the "t"
and "thing." This is another historic club,
originally founded by students with, according to this
official site, "rudimentary notions of the game."
Informative and likeable, but Spanish only.
RAYO VALLECANO
TOP
Rayo
Vallecano
Historically, el Rayo is Madrid's third team.
It is now owned by the extremely shady businessman Ruiz
Mateos and is doing better than the Atléti,
being well placed in the Spanish First Division. This
official page is a bit clever-clever, with a lot of
Java, but highly entertaining. Spanish only.
REAL
MADRID TOP
Real
Madrid C.F.
The great Real Madrid, celebrating its centenary this
year, 2002, and jubilant winners of the Champions' League
(European Cup) 2001-2002, was voted "Club of the Century"
(20th) by the readers of FIFA magazine. Whether or not
you agree with that opinion, it is undeniably one of
the great teams in the world and has a flaming new web
site to match, with a great multimedia section, although
the search format chosen is tiresome. In Spanish, English
and, interestingly, Japanese.
Real
Madrid - unofficial site
A splendid fansite, with a tremendous amount of information,
especially in the History section.
Realmadrid.dk
A Danish fansite, in English, very well put together.
It has a huge number of pictures, organized into slideshows.
REAL
SOCIEDAD TOP
Real
Sociedad
The team of Donostia-San Sebastian, in the Basque
Country. This official page is first-rate, with videos,
a gallery, a forum and chat. Available in Spanish, Basque
and English.
RECREATIVO
DE HUELVA TOP
R.C.
Recreativo de Huelva
Called the decano, most senior member, of Spanish
football, because it is the oldest club in the country,
founded in 1889 by Englishmen related with the Riotinto
Company. In spite of the club's vintage, this is one
of the most modern sites of this kind I have found,
the best part being that it is not in the least sluggish.
SEVILLA
TOP
Sevilla
F.C
Seville's other football team is represented here by
a portal-style site. You will be fine if you ignore
the stuff on the right. Spanish only.
SPORTING
LISBON TOP
Sporting
Lisbon
Again, Portuguese only on this results-oriented site
of the third most important club in Portugal.
TENERIFE
TOP
C.D.
Tenerife
This is one for the Guiness Book of Records as the site
with the least content on the Internet. It has, precisely,
the club's address, fax and telephone numbers and a
blue ribbon showing solidarity with the victims of terrorism.
Ridiculous.
Tenerife
- Peña Internet
In contrast to the official site above, this fansite
(peña means supporters' club) has shiploads
of information. It is "for English speaking supporters
of CD Tenerife Football Club and for anyone else who
may be interested in Spanish football or visiting Tenerife
on holiday," and is cheerful, informative and entertaining.
If I were the official site's webmaster, I would buy
this site up.
VALENCIA
TOP
Valencia
C.F.
The 2001-2002 Spanish League Champions have an awesome
official website, beginning at the entrance page where
you can play pointless but fun games with the footballs
dotted around the screen. The serious contents are comprehensive,
entertaining and understandably jubilant. In Spanish,
English and Valencià.
Ciberche.com
A well-made, enjoyable fansite, with news, videos and
sound clips. Inevitably, one of the clips is Queen's
"We are the Champions." I am sure it is not
legal, but it is undeniably appropriate.
VALLADOLID
TOP
Real
Valladolid
I find this official site extremely garish, though it
is probably only because of over-use of the club's colours,
purple and white. The URL, http://futbol.pucela.net/,
takes its name from that of the club's mascot, a cartoon
castle tower. Spanish only, which considering Valladolid's
historical reputation as the place where the most perfect
Castilian Spanish is spoken is forgivable.
VILLA
REAL TOP
Villa
Real C.F.
Villa o Vila Real is a not very large city in the region
of Valencia, the birthplace of the guitarrist Francisco
Tarrega. It seems extraordinary that it maintains a
very respectable first division football club, which
finished the 2001-2002 league above Mallorca. Its official
site is not especially inspiring, but adequately informative.
Spanish only.
Villa
Real C.F.
This unofficial site is not much more inspiring than
the official one, but in brighter colours. Spanish only.
ZARAGOZA
TOP
Real
Zaragoza
Saragossa's football team is the spiritual representative
of the whole region of Aragón. This official
page is one of the slowest I have ever encountered,
agonizingly so.
