With notable exceptions such as the Maestranza, Ronda, the
4-star hotels on these page are large, impersonal and nearly
perfect holiday machines, designed to help you have a dream
holiday with no worries or cares. Le Courbousier would have
approved, and so do I.
Although this is undoubtedly and historically jetsetland,
the Costa del Sol in general and Marbella in particular seem
to be less popular with the really stinking rich than in the
past. This has a certain trickle-down effect so that prices
are often more accessible than you might expect. This is not
true for August, of course, when just finding anywhere with
vacancies can be a real problem.
If you know of a hotel which you think should be on this
list, or know a web page for one which is here, please e-mail
me.

The first of the four-star Costa del Sol hotels on
these pages is an urban establishment, suitable for
a visit to the city of Málaga. The hotel's rather
functional web
page made me think: "214 rooms, 16 of which
are junior suites, three presidencial suites and one
room equipped for the handicapped." Does this not
imply that there are three presidents in the world for
every handicapped person? But the rates given on the
hotel's web page are better than those offered by the
Hotel Club service, the blurb for which reads: "AC
Malaga Palacio Hotel boasts an unparalleled location
between the Cathedral of Malaga and the Paseo del Parque,
with picturesque views out over the port. It is perfect
for a business trip to enjoy one of the largest range
of recreational and cultural possibilities of the Costa
del Sol."

I have not been able to find this hotel's
web page, but the establishment itself looks quite fine.
The Hotel Club blurb says: "Alay
Hotel is a four-star hotel located right on the beach,
opposite the yacht harbor and the promenade. The hotel
is conveniently situated just 8 km from Malaga Airport
and 15 km from Malaga city center. There are many discos,
bars and restaurants close by, as well as opportunities
for water sports, fishing and windsurfing. A golf course
and a casino are located about 2 km away."

I have no web page for this beachfront
hotel. The Hotel Club* blurb reads:
"Completely renovated in 1999, this modern hotel
is directly situated on the beach in a very convenient
location. It is just 1.5 km from Torremolinos town centre
and 8 km from the airport."

The web
page of the Princess hotel chain is a delight for
Flash fans and a nightmare for its detractors, indeed
it crashed my browser. What is worse, it inexplicably
has no price information. The hotel itself looks rather
splendid, though, and I imagine the Hotel Club price
will be slightly better than the official one. The (uninspired)
Hotel Club* blurb reads: "Andalucia
Princess Hotel is located on the seafront inside the
Princess Complex, between Estepona and Marbella. It
is situated in the heart of Costa del Sol, just 10 minutes
from Puerto Banus and 45 minutes from Malaga airport.
The hotel represents typical Andalusian construction
with a main building and 6 independent buildings and
a total of 385 comfortable rooms."

I have not found a web page for this hotel in Nerja,
but as far as I can tell, it is comfortable, but not
new, and provides a "spectacular panoramic view"
by being slap-bang in the middle of everyone else's
view. The Hotel Club* blurb says: "Balcon
de Europa Hotel...in the old quarter of the historic
Balcon de Europa standing above La Caletilla beach,
enjoying the spectacular panoramic view along the coast
of Nerja. The hotel is in close proximity to the charming
streets of the old town, those of the commercial area,
and all the attractions that this delightful town has
to offer. (...) Due to its location built into the rock
face of the Balcon de Europa, the hotel's main entrance
is via the 6th floor, thus allowing direct access from
the hotel bedrooms to the beach. The hotel has recently
been refurbished and facilities improved."

The Cervantes is, I think, a reasonably
good hotel which is also good value for money, largely
because it is a little back from the seafront. If this
does not put you off, the hotel's website
seems to give better rates even than the Hotel Club
service. The Hotel Club* blurb says:
"The Cervantes Hotel, ideally located in the
Torremolinos Shopping Centre, with views of the sea.
Designed to compliment your personal needs, the Cervantes
Hotel presents a casual, friendly atmosphere, letting
you relax or entertain in both comfort and style."

I went to a wedding reception here once,
so I know it is decidedly swish, and slap-bang on the
seafront, in other words great for families. The hotel
seems not to have a web page of its own, though it belongs
to the Sol Melía chain and you can find information
on their website.
I think you could get a better rate through the Hotel
Club service, though. The Hotel Club* blurb only says:
"Situated on the seafront and surrounded by
gardens and sunny terraces, the hotel is decorated in
typical Spanish style with marble floors and beautiful
tapestries."

This hotel's website
has special offers which even beat the Hotel Club* prices.
The hotel's blurb includes:
"One
of Hotel el Fuerte's enchantment is its position. In
the centre of Marbella, next to the sea and surrounded
by more than 4.000 m2 of subtropical gardens. The nearness
of the Hotel el Fuerte to the historical centre will
allow you to discover corners of the old town of Marbella."

This is one of those curiosities that makes running
a site like this worthwhile. This otherwise standard
Costa del Sol hotel is home to "the largest Chinese
Alternative Medicine Centre in Spain." The
hotel's otherwise fine website
has no price information, so I cannot compare with the
Hotel Club rates. I quote more of the blurb than usual:
"The
Hotel El Paraiso Costa Del Sol is located between Marbella
and Estepona in a quiet residential area. It stands
on a hill with breathtaking views over the Mediterranean
Sea, and is surrounded by a golf course.
The "a la carte" and buffet restaurants as well as the
terrace bar by the swimming pool all offer high quality
service and excellent cuisine. The panoramic bar has
magnificent views of Gibraltar, the African coast and
the Andalusian mountains.
The Hotel El Paraiso Costa Del Sol offers you the largest
Chinese Alternative Medicine Centre in Spain, with Chinese
and European doctors (and interpreters) who provide
traditional Chinese methods such as acupuncture, acupressure,
maxibustion, TUI-NA massages, homeopathy, and naturopathy."

This hotel's website
tells you that the film "A Touch of Class"
was shot here. I cannot imagine film addicts being drawn
here, though, not at these prices (though golfers should
keep an eye on the special offers). (This hotel is no
longer available through the Hotel Club* service.) Blurb:
"Situated
in one of the most beautiful areas of Marbella, directly
on the Beach and on the Golf Course. The Hotel with
typical andalusian architecture, has 177 spacious rooms
with views over the green golf courses, the sea or the
gardens."

*At the moment, most of the hotels
on these pages belong to the Hotel Club online booking service,
of which this site is an affiliate, and in this case I link
to the Hotel Club page. I do not want to give a sales spiel,
but the advantages for you are the convenience of online booking
and, in many cases, a reduced rate. For example, the price
for a night in a double room in the 4-star
Hotel Mayorazgo in Madrid in September as given on the hotel's
web page is €170 plus IVA (value-added tax), whereas
the rate advertised by Hotel
Club is €125, including tax. And I get a little commission
which helps towards the upkeep of this site.
If you have any complaints about the Hotel Club service,
I want to know about them - e-mail me at complaints.
And if you have a gripe about your hotel, by all means feel
free to let me know, though I am not in a position to do anything
about it.
