With the odd exception such as the city hotels in Malaga
on this page, the hotels on this page provide reliable, staple,
not-very-many-frills family-holiday accommodation. The 3-star
price band is out of favour with hotel chains and developers,
who prefer larger, more expensive and more lucrative 4-star
hotels.
This is undoubtedly and historically jetsetland, but the
Costa del Sol in general and Marbella in particular seem to
be less favoured by the really stinking rich than before.
This has a certain trickle-down effect so that prices are
often more accessible than you might expect. This is emphatically
not the case for August, when prices can double or even triple
if you can find a vacancy anywhere.
If you know of a hotel which you think should be on this
list, or know a web page for one which is here, please e-mail
me.

An unappealing city centre hotel, with a simply dreadful
web
page with no price information, so I cannot make
a comparison. Blurb: "Bahia
Malaga Hotel is located in centre of Malaga, which provides
the guests with many facilities to access innumerable
shopping centres, restaurants, official organizations,
and public monuments. Among the places of interest that
are situated in the vicinity of the hotel are the Cathedral,
Castillo de Gibralfaro, and future Museo Picasso."

Although it should be ideal for beach
bums, it must be said that this hotel attracts more
than its fair share of complaints,
especially with regard to what discontented holidaymakers
call "the bug" (which sounds like good old-fashioned
Spanish tummy to me). If you are not put off by this
(and lots of people are quite happy with the Beach Club),
it is a bus ride out of town. And be careful with the
Hotel Club* service here. For August, for a few 3-star
establishments including this one, It does not give
a firm price until you have already given your credit
card details, which I definitely do not recommend. Blurb:
"Enjoy
the pleasure of the Costa del Sol at the Beach Club
where sun, sand, and sea are all abundant. Spend the
afternoon on your patio, swimming, or taking a walk
along the beach. Don't forget to try out the fantastic
restaurant for some wonderful cuisine or stop in the
bar for a nice cocktail at sunset."

Except for peak season (August), this
nearly new hotel has fairly reasonable prices, whether
you book through the Hotel Club* service (do not use
for August, see previous entry) or the hotel's website.
This is because it is a golfer's hotel, inland and a
good distance away from anywhere, so you will be lost
without a car. Blurb:
"...located
between Estepona and Marbella in a residential, secluded
area, by the National Road 340 on the km. 168,5. The
hotel is surrounded by several fine golf-courses, as
well as being only 7 km from the famous harbour of Puerto
Banus and just 3 km from the beach.
... beautifully constructed in the best Andalusian style...
...surrounded by a total of 4.500 square meters of gardens,
exuberant vegetation and Andalusian Patios."

The Hotel Club prices for this hotel seem
frankly high to me. Blurb:
"Hotel
Don Curro is one of the oldest and best known establishments
in Malaga. It is located right in the centre of Malaga,
50 metres from Calle Marques de Larios, the main street
for shopping and social activities, and near such places
of cultural interest as the Cathedral, the Alcazaba
Fortress, the Roman Theatre..."

Attractive prices from Hotel Club*, but
I have not found the hotel's web page to compare. Blurb:
"The
Hotel Fenix is located in the heart of Torremolinos,
some one hundred and fifty metres from the beach, just
a short walk from the hotel. All of the bedrooms have
terraces that offer views of the Mediterranean."

The Flamingo seems to be used by gay travel
agency Throb Holidays and is advertised by them as gay-friendly
(which probably does not mean you could not take your
kids there). Blurb: "Located
within just a couple of minutes walk from central Torremolinos,
5 minutes to the gay scene at La Nogalera and about
a 10 minute stroll from the beach and promenade, the
Flamingo leaves you close to all this and much more."

A very large, modern hotel, a little too
far from the beach but excellent value for money (at
least through Hotel Club*, the hotel's website
does not have prices). Blurb:
"The
friendly Griego Mar Hotel is a tourist hotel just a
couple of minutes walk from the bustling centre of Torremolinos
and it has all the facilities you'd expect."

If you are looking for a hotel which is
handy for Carihuela, the old fishermen's quarter of
Torremolinos, this could be a good choice. I cannot
find the hotel's web page, but the Hotel Club prices
look fair. Blurb: "The
Hotel has an excellent central situation just 200 metres
from the beach and in the lively area of Carihuela.
The Las Palomas Hotel is a well established property
in a great location, approximately 10 minutes walk from
the heart of Torremolinos."

I cannot quite place this hotel, though

in Torremolinos, close to the fishing village of La
Carihuela and 400 yards from its beach."

A tiny bit out of the way, perhaps, but
the hotel looks attractive enough and its website
has a kind of gentility to it. Blurb (I like the "worldwide
famous"):
"The
Nerja Club Hotel is situated in a residential area of
Nerja. It is very close to the Burriana Beach and only
one kilometre away from the worldwide famous "Balcony
of Europe."

If you prefer Benalmádena to Torremolinos,
as many do, the San Fermin looks interesting. Blurb:
"...located
only 350 metres from the beach and 1 km from Benalmadena
Marina. The hotel stands on a hilltop and includes a
large gardened area. It's an ideal place to spend a
pleasant family vacation in the heart of Costa del Sol
in a calm and relaxing environment."

This hotel looks terribly expensive to
me for its category. Its website
is under construction, so all I can offer is the Hotel
Club* blurb: "The
Sidi Lago Rojo Hotel is located right in the heart of
Costa Del Sol, in La Carihuela - the old fisherman's
quarter or Torremolinos. It is only 50 metres from the
beach."

*At the moment, most of the hotels
on these pages belong to the Hotel Club online booking service,
of which this site is an affiliate, and in this case I link
to the Hotel Club page. I do not want to give a sales spiel,
but the advantages for you are the convenience of online booking
and, in many cases, a reduced rate. For example, the price
for a night in a double room in the 4-star
Hotel Mayorazgo in Madrid in September as given on the hotel's
web page is €170 plus IVA (value-added tax), whereas
the rate advertised by Hotel
Club is €125, including tax. And I get a little commission
which helps towards the upkeep of this site.
If you have any complaints about the Hotel Club service,
I want to know about them - e-mail me at complaints.
And if you have a gripe about your hotel, by all means feel
free to let me know, though I am not in a position to do anything
about it.
