AC Santo Mauro top Location - Castellana

Hotel Club blurb* - "This five star hotel is located in the heart of Madrid's Chamberi neighborhood, near the Paseo de la Castellana. This was the area, where, at the end of the 19th century, the Spanish nobility established their residences and their small palace mansions. One of these palaces is today the Ac Santo Mauro, which saw its 100th anniversary in 1994. Restored in 1999, the hotel combines the classical style with more contemporary architectural elements."

Hesperia Hotel top Location - Castellana

A new hotel on the Castellana. HC's blurb includes: "...the Hesperia Hotel is designed to cater for those who are accustomed to top class accommodation. The interior was done by a leading Spanish designer, Pascua Ortega (who, among others, was involved in the renovation of the Royal Opera House of Madrid). The hotel is located in the heart of the main business and shopping district of Madrid, the Paseo de la Castellana. The service is impeccable and your stay is guaranteed to be a memorable one."

Melia Madrid Princesa Hotel top Location - Plaza España

I am a fan of Melia, the Spanish hotel chain. This hotel was demoted to four-star and promoted again for 2001, so you know a certain effort has been made. Hotel Club's blurb includes: ... located in one of the most elegant and fashionable areas of Madrid, opposite the Palacio De Liria and minutes from the Plaza De Espana. The nearest metro station is Ventura Rodriguez. The hotel has a large reception that is extremely well decorated to a deluxe standard, with many fine furnishings, marbled floors, large Persian rugs and Chinese vases. The rooms are large and well decorated. The rooms on the top floor of the hotel offer a fantastic view over the city.

Hotel Miguel Angel top Location - Castellana

Full name, the Hotel Occidental Miguel Angel. Hotel Club's blurb calls it "the most modern deluxe hotel in Madrid."

Hotel Mindanao top Location - Pº San Francisco
Click for Photo

Hotel Club blurb: "The Hotel Mindanao is located in the residential district of Madrid, only 2 km from the main city center. The hotel offers 300 rooms, all equipped with a telephone, TV, in-house video and ambient music. On the premises you will also find a private garage, bars, restaurants and a cafeteria. Sit by the swimming pool or relax in the sauna."

Orfila Hotel top Location - Pº Castellana
Click for Photo

The Orfila is one of those exclusive small hotels (28 rooms and 4 suites) which are increasingly fashionable nowadays, as more and more people reject the impersonality of the large chains. Located in a 19th century palace, its rooms may overlook the street or its private garden. The hotel's own website has a suitably restrained elegance, as well, and even the Hotel Club blurb is rather charming: "...a new concept of hotel service in the capital of Spain... a refined atmosphere that makes (the client) feel like the old sirs of that nineteenth century mansion..."

Palace Hotel top Location - Pº Prado
Click for Photo

Whoops, I have already discussed the Palace, on this page. Never mind, here is the Hotel Club spiel: "The Palace Hotel offers its guests historical elegance amidst breathtaking Madrid. The Palace commands a prominent position, facing Neptune Fountain and The Prado on Plaza de las Cortes. The historical, Louis XVI-style building offers incomparable settings for leisure and entertainment, along with the utmost in elegance and comfort. The Palace's historical origins are reflected in its wide range of accommodations, which blend exquisite detailing and contemporary comforts."

Tryp Monte Real top Location - Puerta de Hierro
Click for Photo

Puerta de Hierro is the suburb of Madrid's jet set and other extremely well-off types. HC's blurb adds that it "... is near a prestigious golf club and the late Generalissimo Franco's country estate. The hotel's country setting is enlivened by tennis courts, an outdoor pool and lovely grounds and gardens. Inside, a collection of Impressionist paintings hang on the walls of the hotel's French restaurant. There is also a nightclub, meeting rooms and a discotheque."

Villa Magna top Location - Castellana
Click for Photo

Not quite the Ritz, but the word is that it is damned close.

Villa Real top Location - Art Triangle
Click for Photo

Just behind the Hotel Palace, the Villa Real is a relatively new establishment which aims for the same sort of 19th century classicism. Its art collection is in keeping, combining 18th and 19th century furniture, 18th century tapestries and Roman statuary and tiles. Blurb: "although of recent construction, (the hotel) has been carefully merged into its surroundings, built with fine materials and exquisite decoration."

Hotel Wellington top Location - Salamanca District
Click for Photo

At the beginning of C/Velázquez, very near the Retiro and the Prado Museum. The HC blurb adds: "At the Wellington Hotel you will find 275 rooms and 25 suites decorated in a classical but functional style, and fully equipped with electronic locking system, satellite TV, individual safe and room service 24 hours a day."

* Many of the three-, four- and five-star hotels included on these pages belong to the Hotel Club online booking service, of which this site is an affiliate, and in this case I link to the Hotel Club page. I do not want to give a sales spiel, but the advantages for you are the convenience of online booking and, in many cases, a reduced rate. For example, the price for a night in a double room in the 4-star Hotel Mayorazgo in Madrid in September as given on the hotel's web page is €170 plus IVA (value-added tax), whereas the rate advertised by Hotel Club is €125, including tax. And I get a little commission which helps towards the upkeep of this site.

If you have any complaints about the Hotel Club service, I want to know about them - e-mail me at complaints. And if you have a gripe about your hotel, by all means feel free to let me know, though I am not in a position to do anything about it.
