I have always thought of this as the staple accommodation price-band: not too expensive, reliable, etc., but no, it is increasingly difficult to find lodgings in this range, especially in important cities. At the moment, there are twenty-two Madrid hotels here for you to choose from.

If you know of a hotel which you think should be on this list, please e-mail me.

Abba Aramo Hotel
AC Hotel Avenida de America
Asturias Hotel
Claridge Hotel
Francisco I Hotel
Moncloa Garden Hotel
Negresco Hotel
NH Alberto Aguilera Hotel

Slightly away from the centre, but not excessively so, this hotel looks like excellent value to me.Its webpage offers a virtual tour and online booking (compare prices with the Hotel Club offer). The Hotel Club* blurb says: "A first-class hotel, the Abba Aramo was totally rebuilt in 1999 and is situated close to the Castellana, near the Atocha Station. The hotel has 108 guest rooms that are furnished with special attention to comfort and to create an elegant atmosphere. All rooms are provided with air conditioning and heating."

I have seen this slightly pricey hotel listed as a four-star, which might explain it. But it belongs to the Melía chain, which is a fair guarantee, and is very well placed for the airport and business areas (and so may be of more interest to business than leisure travellers). The Hotel Club* spiel says: "AC Hotel Avenida de America Madrid is a modern and functional hotel located in Cartagena Street, next to Avenida de America and with direct access to the road to Barcelona and Madrid-Barajas Airport. It is also close to train and bus stations and the Juan Carlos I exhibition centre, and is very well connected by underground."

This hotel is about as central as it is possible to be and very reasonably priced, and the Hotel Club reservation service is offering even lower prices than the hotel's website. Here is the Hotel Club* blurb: "The Asturias Hotel offers a touch of Old World elegance. The intimate, individually-detailed guest rooms at the Asturias offer a bath, telephone and heating. The hotel offers all of its guests a warm welcome to Madrid and a host of services including public parking."

This aristocratically named hotel is a wee bit out of the way - you will need to use public transport or a taxi to get into the centre. The Hotel Club* blurb reads: "The Claridge Hotel is situated on commercial area of Conde Casal Square and only five minutes to the city center. It is close to the Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen. Transport is easy, with the main central railway station Atocha-Ave and main bus terminal in close proximity."

Tremendously central and very reasonably priced (perhaps because Calle Arenal used to be slightly sordid, but it has been smartened up in recent years and is now quite chic). The Hotel Club* blurb reads: "Hotel Francisco I is a classical building located in the very heart of Madrid. It is surrounded by many of the most important historical and artistic monuments. The hotel is close to the main shopping area and tourist attractions."

The Arguelles area is one of the most interesting in Madrid, where an aging, bourgeois population cohabits with a young studenty crowd. This hotel's website is hard on the eyes and does not allow real on-line booking, but it is cheerful and well meant. The Hotel Club* blurb reads: "The Moncloa Garden Hotel is located in the business center of the city, in one of the best connected areas of Madrid. This magnificent location in the heart of the shopping area and next to the University campus, the Prado Museum and the Royal Palace means that the worlds of business, art and leisure come together at the Moncloa Garden Hotel. It is also only five minutes away from the Plaza de Espana and the Gran Via, it also has direct access to the La Coruna motorway."

I have heard good things about the Partner Hotels chain (but cannot speak from experience). The Hotel Club* blurb for this hotel reads: "This lovely establishment belongs to the chain of charming, small hotels called Partner Hotels. It has 19 rooms, perfectly equipped to combine comfort and simplicity with the functionality of its services. It is located in the heart of the city, which makes it a good option for discovering the historic-artistic centre of Madrid."

NH Alberto Aguilera Hotel ***

The NH chain offers medium-sized to large, quality hotels which are very well located and extremely reliable: absence of nasty surprises pretty well guaranteed. You should get better prices through the Hotel Club pages, though. The Hotel Club* blurb says: "NH Alberto Aguilera Hotel Madrid is situated near the Plaza de Espana, Gran Via and the University area. The hotel offers 148 comfortable guest rooms that feature all the modern facilities."

NH Embajada Hotel ***

This NH hotel is located in one of my favourite corners of Madrid, the Plaza Alonso Martínez. The Hotel Club* blurb says: "NH Embajada Hotel Madrid is housed in a newly refurbished building with a traditional design which dominates one of the corners in Plaza de Alonso Martinez. Among many places of interest situated near the hotel are the archaeological museum and Plaza de Colon. The hotel offers 101 comfortable guest rooms with all the modern facilities."

NH Zurbano Hotel ***

The location of this hotel probably makes it more interesting to business than leisure travellers. The Hotel Club blurb says: "NH Zurbano Hotel Madrid is located in the center of the city, just 100 meters from the Paseo de la Castellana Boulevard and close to the Museum of Natural Science. Is is situated near Palacio de Congresos with easy access to the IFEMA trade complex, and only 15 minutes from Barajas Airport. Recently refubrished, NH Zurbano offers 255 comfortable rooms equipped with all modern facilities."

*At the moment, most of the hotels on these pages belong to the Hotel Club online booking service, of which this site is an affiliate, and in this case I link to the Hotel Club page. I do not want to give a sales spiel, but the advantages for you are the convenience of online booking and, in many cases, a reduced rate. For example, the price for a night in a double room in the 4-star Hotel Mayorazgo in Madrid in September as given on the hotel's web page is €170 plus IVA (value-added tax), whereas the rate advertised by Hotel Club is €125, including tax. And I get a little commission which helps towards the upkeep of this site.

If you have any complaints about the Hotel Club service, I want to know about them - e-mail me at complaints. And if you have a gripe about your hotel, by all means feel free to let me know, though I am not in a position to do anything about it.
