Alternative
Mallorca
A Leeds-based firm with a nice website, including great information
and listing self-catering accommodation - villas and apartments
- and hotels, including some small hotels with character,
difficult to find elsewhere on the web. No on-line booking,
but full contact details. They only do flights from the UK,
but non-Brits could do worse than book accommodation here.
Bonaventure
Specialising in up-market destinations and accommodation
in the Canary Islands, Algarve, Majorca and Costa del Sol,
Bonaventure say they are "founder members of AITO."
So I am a little surprised contact information is difficult
to find on this site (you need to click "Booking Form"
and download a text, Word or pdf document). That apart, this
site is quite fine, with good information about the destinations
and an ample range of hotels, including paradors.
Cadogan
Holidays
This company admits that "Cadogan is part of the
Bland Group - a major international company founded in 1810,"
so I do not know how they qualify for membership of AITO.
Their wide range of destinations includes Spain and Portugal
and their islands (as well as North Africa, Malta and Cyprus),
but the site is less than satisfactory and you will have to
order a brochure from them if you want to know prices, for
example.
Club
Cantabrica
Odd. The homepage of this site displays an interactive map
of the Mediterranean from the Costa Brava to Corfu, with not
a sign of Cantabria. But the company specialises in very affordable,
independent travel, with campsite or mobile-home accommodation.
And as well as flights and fly-and-drive, it also offers transport
by coach from a large number of places in the UK, making it
even more affordable.
Destination
Portugal
A bit garish, but a great site with lots of information about
a full range of mid- to upper-range holidays in all the important
Portuguese destinations and activities including golf and
whale watching.
EHS
Travel
An upmarket travel agency offering destinations in Portugal
(including Madeira) and Spain (including Majorca, Minorca
and Tenerife) (as well as the Caribbean, Kenya, Goa... which
should give you an idea of the market they are aiming at).
Expensive hotels and villas, but at least, for once, the information
on prices is more complete than the sales pitch.
The
Individual Traveller Co.
Personally, I could spend hours browsing this aesthetically
dreamy site which offers "villa, cottage and farmhouse
holidays" in five countries, including Spain and Portugal.
It has full information (including photos) on a nice range
of characterful properties and some surprising destinations.
Mundi
Color Spain and Portugal
Claiming to be "the UK's Number One specialist travel
operator to Spain, Portugal and Mexico," this is actually
the British subsidiary of one of the largest operators in
Spain. The site is superficially attractive, but specific
information is quite hard to find and you will probably need
to order one of their brochures to get it.
Spain
at Heart
This small UK company offers "rural properties in Andalucia,"
including self-catering accommodation, hotels and country
houses, at what look to me like very reasonable prices. Nice.
The
Villa Agency
A very wide range of villas in the Algarve and Lisbon Coast
and a very wide range of prices to go with it, from reasonable
to frankly astronomic. A well made site with full, up-to-date
information.
