This page is for people who are going to travel to Spain or Portugal to spend more than just a week or two. Whether you are going to take a year out, your company is posting you abroad, you are looking for a study programme, you want to eat lotuses all summer or you just feel an urge to soak up a different culture, you should find some useful stuff here.

SPV Articles, Sections and Links Pages

Cabaret Work in Spain
A post on the message board of another site asked for advice on how to get cabaret work in Benidorm, and having been through the process myself, I offered some recommendations. Here they are.

House Hunting in Spain
A dedicated page of wittily, illuminatingly annotated links to help you find your ideal home, or at least a roof to sleep under.

Living and Working in Spain
A review of this splendid book by David Hampshire of Survival Handbooks. If you only intend to buy one book on the subject, it should undoubtedly be this one, which takes you through most of the tricky situations an emigrant to Spain is likely to encounter: jobhunting, househunting, buying a car, driving, etc., without forgetting your all-important leisure time.

Set Piece - Working as a Film Extra
To find out about the possibilities of making a living as a film extra in Spain, I signed up to work on the Fernando Trueba film El Embrujo de Shanghai (Shanghai Gesture). I discovered that it is possible, but it is far from easy and even further removed from being well paid.

TEFL in Spain and Portugal
Call it TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language), TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) or TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), it is a good way to be able to live and work in a country for a year or two - sometimes much longer. A dedicated page of selected, annotated links.

Apart from the above, you will find most of this site's hard information about living and working in Spain and/or Portugal under the following headings:

Buying Property
Job Hunting
Living in Spain/Portugal
Study in Spain/Portugal

Elsewhere on the Net - Recommended Links

Au Pair Agencies in Spain
A list of names and addresses.

Ideal Spain
Especially oriented towards those who are considering moving to Spain, Ideal Spain will be very useful for other visitors as well. Run "by Steve and Sandra from their base on the Costa del Sol," with content which is "all our own work" (and good work, too), it is highly informative and entertaining.

Immigrants and Foreigners
This site, from the Bar Society of Saragossa, is dense and difficult to navigate, but has a tremendous amount of information and some interesting links for the legally minded. Unfortunately, the English is a little strange in places and many of the links lead to a Spanish-only page.

Importing a Car to Spain
Like many bureaucratic procedures in Spain, this can be tortuous. (I have a theory that the Hapsburgs brought a Teutonic taste for paperwork with them, the combination of which with the Mediterranean tendency to procrastination is deadly.)

PAYAway - Spain and Portugal
A splendid site with shiploads of information and links, which will be especially interesting to those looking for vacation jobs. TEFL is amply represented as well, but on the down side, Portugal is not really dealt with at all.

Portugal's Guide
Some great stuff here from a Portuguese removal firm. Residence visas and permits, healthcare, finding somewhere to live... I really hope their efforts are rewarded.

Studyabroad - Portugal
Studyabroad.com's Portugal page. A rather meagre list of courses and country information.

Studyabroad - Spain
Studyabroad.com's Spain page has plenty of courses for all tastes, including a course-finder and with country information thrown in.

Summerjobs.com - Spain
Summer jobs in Spain. Not many, but constantly updated, at least in theory.

Work Permits in Spain
Detailed information aimed at employers who need to use non-Spanish workers, but others will probably find what they are looking for as well.

Hotels
Hotel Club
This booking service covers a very wide range of places in both Spain and Portugal.

Venere.com
An on-line booking service with great discounts.

Car Hire
Auto Europe
Car rental, motor homes, minibuses... And an interesting short-term lease option.
