Mediterranean Blue

Madeira is an archipelago in the Atlantic which belongs to Portugal. It has two inhabited islands, Madeira itself and Porto Santo. Their mild climate, spectacular scenery and exotic flora make them a year-round resort.

Links

About Madeira
Nothing to do with About.com, this is from a Madeira real-estate company. The information is fine, the font is nearly illegible.

Madeira in My Heart - Best of the Net
Corny name, good site, from Nancy Sandvoll, a Norse lady who has established a place for herself as an Internet authority on Portugal.

Madeira Island
A brief introduction to the island, with a number of useful links.

MadeiraIsland.com
Related with Madeira Online, below, this site has some interesting if quirky information (Madeira as a special retreat for W. Churchill) and an active forum which can get quite spicey (the thread "Joe is looking for a wife" has been running since 1999 and gets more entertaining by the minute).

Madeira Natural Park
The Portuguese-only official site is, anyway, as dry as dust, in spite of the gorgeous photo on the entrance page.

Madeira Online
A links directory and search engine on this commercial, Yahoo-style site, maintained (I think) by a web hosting company.

Madeira Tourism
The official Madeira Tourist Board site is great, if slow, and especially good on ecotourism and nature. The Accommodation pages are interesting, as they include links to the websites of the hotels themselves, some of which are surprisingly well designed (the websites, not the hotels). Illogically, you need to click "Activities and Events" to find information on the island's interesting buildings and so forth.

Madeira Web
The best online guide to the island, with some very attractive elements (e.g., the web cams, virtual tour of the island). In short, though not as detailed as Madeira Online, more interesting for visitors.

MadeiraWine.com
Another great site from the Madeira Online folks, with a tremendous amount of information about Madeira wine, its history, vineyards, producers, varieties...

Hotels
Hotel Club
This booking service covers a very wide range of places in both Spain and Portugal.

Venere.com
An on-line booking service with great discounts.

Car Hire
Auto Europe
Car rental, motor homes, minibuses... And an interesting short-term lease option.
