Alcalá de Henares
Alcalá de Henares is a world heritage site for its university
and also famous for being the birthplace of Cervantes. It
is very accessible from Madrid and is good for a morning away
from the capital. Selected, annotated links.
Aranjuez
For visitors, Aranjuez's most interesting sight is the Jardin
del Principe, Prince's Garden, a former royal hunting
estate. Gastronomically, it is famous for its fresón,
a very large variety of strawberry - because of its microclimate,
Aranjuez is a market garden centre. Selected, annotated links.
Arganda
del Rey
Not one of the major places to visit in Spain, but attractive,
historical market town south-east of Madrid. Spanish-only
municipal website.
Madrid
Madrid's two main attractions are its incredible nightlife
and its unbeatable museums. If you stay long enough or are
lucky, you may discover its hidden treasure - its people.
Selected, annotated links.
San Lorenzo
de El Escorial
Generally referred to just as 'El Escorial,' its main attraction
is the awesome Royal Seat, part monastery, part austere palace,
erected by Philip II. Selected, annotated links.
Segovia
Segovia is a mediaeval city, like Toledo, but with a quite
different feel to it. Its main sights are the Roman aqueduct
and the Alcazar, the Disney-like appearance of which belies
its sinister past. It is gastronomically important as well
- you must try the cochinillo, slow-roasted suckling
pig. Selected, annotated links.
Toledo
The city of Toledo is a kind of still life of the three great
cultures that made mediaeval Spain one of the most dynamic
countries in the world - Jewish, Muslim and Christian. Selected,
annotated links.
Elsewhere on the Net
Avila
Ávila is the most mystical of Spanish cities, pervaded by
the personality and the austerity of Saint Theresa of Jesus.
Its most important sights are the soaring city walls and the
cathedral.
Avila
The spanking new municipal tourism site is informative and
useful and one of the most sumptuous websites I have seen,
so much so that it is only slightly marred by some of the
worst English ever written.
Ávila
- from World Heritage Cities
As usual from the World Heritage Cities corner of Cyberspain,
this site gives a good presentation, especially on the first
page, but the English gives out as you get further in.
Chinchón
A lovely mediaeval town about 45 km south-west of the city
of Madrid. Its town square is still used for bullfights in
the same way as it would have been three or four hundred years
ago. It is a favourite weekend excursion for Madrileños,
who come to have an aperitivo or two or three under
the arches, followed by a Castilian roast in one of the excellent
asadores.
Chinchon
The municipal site is a wee bit functional, but informative
and reasonably nice to look at.
