Consonants are only slightly more difficult than vowels,
and you can usually get away with pronouncing them as you
would in English. Exceptions are "c", which
is lisped, like a loud 'th', before "e" or "i";"g",
which is pronounced like the 'ch' in 'loch' before 'e' and
'i' and like an English hard 'g' at other times; "h",
which is always silent; "j", which is also
pronounced like the Scottish 'ch' (or a very emphatic 'h');
"ll" (which not long ago was considered a
separate letter in the alphabet) is best pronounced 'y' unless
you are studying Spanish seriously (in which case, try to
say 'y' and 'l' at the same time); "ñ",
which you can pronounce 'ny'; "qu", where
the 'u' is silent; "r", which has a single
Scottish roll (so "rr" has two); "v",
pronounced like 'b'; "x", pronounced like
's' before consonants ("ex-tra" sounds
like "es-tra"); and "z",
which is pronounced 'th'. One of the most challenging words
to pronounce in Spanish is "cerveza," (pr.
there-bay-tha)but you will probably
learn it very quickly unless you are abstemious.
