On
the Line
The line in question is the prime meridian (0º longitude),
which runs through eight countries: Togo, Ghana, Burkina Faso,
Mali, Algeria, Spain, France, and the United Kingdom. My link
takes you to the Spanish pages, but it is a fascinating project
and well worth exploring further, just for fun.
Spain
Alive
Not, as I thought, the site of the Broadsheet (a monthly
English-language magazine essentially dedicated to classified
ads, but which has been given a new boost of life in recent
years), but a joint venture between it and the Spanish leisure
guide, the Guía del Ocio. Lots of nice stuff
- I have just found out, for example, that the one-star Hotel
Monaco was a luxury brothel frequented by Alfonso XIII.
Travel
Intelligence - Spain Best of the
Net
This site is a must for anyone who appreciates good travel
writing. Many of its writers are first class and those that
are not are damned close - not worse, but less good. Travel-writer-speak
("Nature was generous with Granada's setting") slips
through so occasionally that it is jarring when it does. Although
the stories are not always as centred on the place in question
as the reader might like, the articles cover a good range
of the locations a traveller is likely to be interested in:
Granada, Seville, Madrid, Barcelona, the Way to Santiago...
The hotel reviews are interesting and sometimes mouth-watering
and, as a bonus, links under "Before You Die" bring
up memorable quotes.
Traveling
in Spain
This site is a little chaotic but has some great information
and images. The photos are especially impressive, though they
can take centuries to load.
tuSPAIN
- your Spain
An excellent site which I link to often. It has an entertaining
magazine format, original features and photo-reports on Spain,
news, information about hotels, the arts, culture, property
advice, heritage, the environment, classified ads... Recommended.
Typically
Spanish
A first-rate site. Like Spain and Portugal for Visitors,
Typically Spanish is maintained single-handed and if only
for that reason is a remarkable achievement. Its creator,
Howard Brereton, an English freelance broadcaster based in
Spain, keeps it up by having commercial services on the site:
on-line hotel booking, car rental and so forth. This aside,
it has a great deal of information, though not always as easy
to find as it might be.
World
Info Zone - Spain
I am impressed by this appealing and ambitious project combining
web design and pedagogy. Students and teachers, especially,
should find it of use. It is quibbling to remark that it has
a few contentious or at least arguable assertions ("Gypsies
(are) the only ethnic minority;" bullfighting considered
a sport).
